UE rips Adamson behind Mammie double-double

By Anthony Divinagracia Posted Sep 14th 2013

Charles Mammie ably filled the big offensive void left by the spitfirish Sumang as he dished off a double-double of 24 points and 24 rebounds.

University of the East (UE) rested a “playable” Roi Sumang on Saturday but the Warriors hardly missed the services of their go-to-guy, turning back Adamson University in the 76th UAAP men’s basketball tournament at the MOA Arena.

Charles Mammie ably filled the big offensive void left by the spitfirish Sumang as the Sierra Leone behemoth exploded for a season-high double-double of 24 points and 24 rebounds to anchor UE’s 77-60 whipping of the Falcons, who capped their last game with coach Leo Austria on a sour note,

The 6’8 Mammie got crucial support from seldom-used Bong Galanza, who scored 17 points, including seven in UE’s 14-2 endgame salvo to ice the contest.

Ralf Olivares also came back from suspension with aplomb, tallying 11 markers, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals to offset Sumang’s absence on the floor.

“Back in the first round, Adamson brought us back to the ground. This time nakabawi kami,” UE coach Boysie Zamar said after the Warriors grabbed their sixth win in 13 outings.

“It’s been a month since we last won here (at the MOA Arena). Ang daming nangyari sa loob ng isang buwan. Ang importante we survived at nai-angat namin kahit paano yung character ng mga bata.”

Mammie chewed every Adamson defender thrown at him, including Ingrid Sewa. But Sewa proved no match to the hardworking Mammie, who helped the Warriors re-established their foothold of the game, starting from a 52-42 breakaway with 5:31 in the third period.

Adamson stalked UE however behind the wondrous shooting touch of Don Trollano, who drilled nine straight points on a variety of jumpers and a triple to push the Falcons within 55-62 going into the payoff period.

But with its defense all over the place, UE limited the Falcons to a measly five points in the fourth and the Warriors virtually coasted the rest of the way.

Sumang actually suited up but Zamar decided to bench him for precautionary reasons.

“He can play but we opted not to field him. We have to think about his career in the long run. After all the others stepped up,” Zamar said of Sumang, who rode the bench the entire game after straining his right knee against Ateneo de Manila University last Sunday.

Despite missing Sumang, the Warriors opened the game with a lot of energy, building a 62-52 advantage late in the third quarter to keep the Falcons at bay after Adamson came within 50-56.

Trollano led Adamson with 15 points and 12 rebounds while Ryan Monteclaro added 10. Adamson capped its season at 4-10.
