Bullpups start new season with win over Eaglets

The NU Bullpups kicked off their UAAP Season 76 campaign with a victory over Ateneo while UE began their season with a win over UPIS.

Title favorites National University started their campaign with a 79-72 victory over Ateneo De Manila University as the UAAP Season 76 Juniors basketball tournament resumed on Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Former Philippine Team Under-16 member Hubert Cani led the charge for the Bulllpups with 24 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. John Caulian and rookie power forward Mark Dyke contributed 15 and 13 points respectively.

NU led by as many as 23 points, 56-33 late in the third period before the Eaglets began employed a full court press to spark a comeback. Ateneo came to within just two points, 72-70 with just 27.4 seconds left in the game after Thirdy Ravena drove coast to coast for a fastbreak layup. But, that would be the Eaglets’ last basket of the contest as Cani and Dyke went on to ice the game on the free-throw line.

Ravena finished 27 points and 11 rebounds for Ateneo.

In the first game, the University of the East defeated the University of the Philippines Integrated School 87-81.

Reymar Caduyac of the Junior Warriors had a monster game with 27 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assist and 3 steals.

As for the Baby Maroons, they were led by the 21 points of Diego Dario.

The UAAP Season 76 Juniors basketball tournament resumes on Saturday, July 6, 2013 at the Araneta Coliseum as Ateneo (0-1) takes on UE (1-0) while defending champion Far Eastern University (0-1) looks to bounce from their opening day loss as they face De La Salle-Zobel.
