UPIS outlasts Adamson after four overtimes while NU slays UST a battle between two unbeaten teams.

After four quarters and an additional four grueling overtime periods, the University of the Philippines Integrated School emerged victoriously over Adamson University, 89-87 in the UAAP Season 76 Juniors basketball tournament on Sunday, July 14, 2013 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Raymart Sablan topscored for the Junior Maroons with 29 points including the basket that tied things up at 56, forcing the game into the first overtime. Freddy Pajarillaga contributed 19 points for UPIS while converting a shot with five seconds left to play to send the game into double overtime, 63-all.

Adamson looked to have seized the game away as they led 72-64 with 2:35 remaining in the second overtime but UPIS went on a 10-run to take the lead, 74-72 with 37 seconds to go. But, the Baby Falcons would respond courtesy of Allan Casiňo to force yet another extension.

In the third overtime, Adamson once again had UPIS on the ropes with a three-point lead, 82-79, with 11 seconds left on the clock. However, Jozhua General saved the day for the Junior Maroons by knocking in a three-pointer that led to what would become the fourth and final overtime of the game.

With Adamson up, 87-85, UPIS unleashed a 4-0 run with a booming triple by Josiah Chua and a free-throw by Sablan to seal the win.

“It’s a clear case of perseverance and trust in each other that gave us this sweet victory,” said UPIS Head Coach Allan Gregorio after the game.

UPIS notched their first win of the season to improve to 1-2 while Adamson remained winless at 0-3.

In the second game, National University dismantled the University of Sto. Tomas 81-56 in a battle between two unbeaten teams in the league.

Ace playmaker Hubert Cani had a marvelous performance with 20 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists.

The Bullpups are now 3-0 while the Tiger Cubs tasted its first loss of the season for a 2-1 win-loss card.

The UAAP Season 76 Juniors basketball tournament resumes on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at the Mall of Asia Arena as the University of the East (1-2) battles NU (3-0) at 8:00 A.M. while UST (2-1) faces off against De La Salle-Zobel (3-0) in the second game at 10:00 A.M..
