FEU sweeps first round of women's basketball

By Donjie Carreon Posted Aug 4th 2013

Far Eastern University won their 25 straight game en route to sweeping the first round of the UAAP Season 76 women's basketball tournament.

Defending champions Far Eastern University completed its sweep of the first round of the Season 75 Women’s basketball tournament with surprising ease, as it dispatched De La Salle University, 70-49, on Sunday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Archers were bent on limiting FEU’s Camille Sambile and assigned Nicole Garcia to shadow her. The ploy was effective in the first quarter, as Sambille was held scoreless and forced to sit out after picking two quick fouls.

But the Lady Tamaraws exploded for 29 points in the second quarter for a 41-20 halftime lead as they started hitting their perimeter shots while Sambile finally escaped Garcia.

La Salle failed to get going in the second half, and when the lead ballooned to as much as 70-40 in the middle of the fourth quarter FEU coach Allan Albano finally pulled out his starters.

“Maganda yung planning naming particularly sa depensa… Maganda din yung gising namin (kaya maraming pumasok sa perimeter)… Alam ko mananalo kami pero di ko inexpect na ganito kalaki,” said Albano.

The FEU coach said that with the first round sweep complete, he will give his team time to rest and recuperate and study game tapes to see which areas they can still improve on. FEU is now 7-0, while La Salle falls to third with its 5-2 slate.

Sambile led FEU with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Maritess Albano added 14 points. Jack Tanaman and Vangie Soriano also chipped in 10 points each. No one from La Salle scored in double digits, with Cass Santos’s nine the team high.

In other games, National University defeated University of Sto. Tomas, 81-69, to finish second in the first round standings at 6-1 and dump the Lady Tigresses to fifth with a 3-4 card.

Adamson University (4-3) finished fourth after its 81-53 thumping of Ateneo de Manila University (0-7), while the University of the Philippines (3-4) beat the University of the East (1-6), 67-55.
