Wounded UST, struggling FEU battle

By Josiah Albelda Posted Sep 1st 2013

Karim Abdul and the rest of the UST Growling Tigers go for back-to-back wins when they take on the league-leading FEU Tamaraws.

The UAAP lead not theirs solely anymore, Far Eastern University attempts to push ahead once more when they take on University of Santo Tomas in the 76th UAAP men's basketball tournament on Sunday at 12 noon at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Tamaraws easily dispatched the Growling Tigers in their first round encounter but after losing three of their last four games, FEU has yet to gather steam in the second round.

Terrence Romeo and RR Garcia teamed up to score 36 points as the Morayta-based squad downed UST, 77-67 last July 21.

But it has been a different story since then, as both the Tamaraws and the Tigers have struggled to chalk up wins as the tournament wore on.

UST snapped out of a long funk by creaming Adamson University, 80-67, last Wednesday. The Season 75 runners-up, however, would have a lot of catching up to do if they aim to return to the Last Dance.

The Tigers sit at fifth to sixth spots with a 5-5 record and a win would propel them to to the top four in what has turned out to be an intense battle for postseason berths.

On the other hand, FEU totes an 8-3 card and would regain the solo lead with a victory.

They are coming off a brutal 73-92 beating from Ateneo de Manila University, with Romeo and Garcia combining for 30 points, many of them in garbage time already.

The game will air live on Studio 23, BALLS HD 167 and uaapsports.tv with a same day replay at 6 p.m. on BALLS SkyCable channel 34 or Destiny Cable channel 36.
