University of Santo Tomas (UST) notched its first win on a rain-marred Wednesday that saw defending champion Far Eastern University (FEU) and Ateneo de Manila University leaving an unplayable pitch in the 76th UAAP women’s football tournament.
Tigresses striker Marice Magdolot pounced on a clearing miscue by De La Salle University in the 68th minute before whipping home a venomous flyer through an empty net to lift UST past the Lady Archers for good, 1-0.
Magdolot’s late goal underscored La Salle’s tenacity on defense three-fourths of the way before yielding what could have been an easy clearance against a broken UST play.
La Salle repeatedly bombarded UST’s goal with a plethora of attempts but none managed to sneak through its back four until the final whistle.
In the second game, the Lady Tamaraws and the Lady Eagles engaged in a heated see-saw battle from the opening kick. But the feverish encounter had to cool down with the score tied at 1-1 as rains soaked the FEU Diliman pitch. The game was stopped at the 56th minute.
Prior to that abrupt ending, FEU seized the lead in the 46th minute on Sharmine Siaotong’s goal before Ateneo’s Antonette Amoncio responded with her own foray in the 47th minute.
The FEU-Ateneo game will resume this week.
