The highly anticipated showdown between two high-octane teams took an unfortunate turn as one of the match’s main protagonists had to be carried out of the pitch on a stretcher.
League-leading goal scorer Fitch Arboleda suffered an injury to his left hamstring while charging down the field during the 15th minute of the match. Although he was seen walking on his own at halftime, the Romblon native was held out of action in the second half.
With Arboleda sidelined, Far Eastern University took advantage and defeated the University of the East, 1-0 in the UAAP Season 76 Men’s Football tournament held on Friday, December 6, 2013 in FEU-Diliman.
After numerous attempts at goal by the Tamaraws from the likes of Jess Melliza and Nicolas Ferrer, FEU finally found the back of the net in the 69th minute off a free kick by Val Jurao. As the ball bounced off the ground and moved towards the goal, UE’s Nik Molo appeared to have a good chance to deflect its path, but it somehow got past his left boot. Even the Red Booters’ goalkeeper Lendon Clores, seemed baffled by the movement of the ball and was not able to react correctly.
With the victory, FEU is now at the top of the team standings with a 4-0-0 record for the maximum 12 points while UE suffered its first loss of the season for a 3-1-1 record and ten points
