University of the Philippines’ (UP) Street Dance Club emerged as the new master of moves on Saturday, dethroning reigning back-to-back champion De La Salle University to clinch the 75th UAAP street dance title at the packed SM North Edsa Skydome.
Garbed in UP’s signature maroon with touches of black, the State U dancers flashed an intricate yet powerful mix of versatility and overall showmanship to upstage the opposition for the title-clinching 91.17 points.
La Salle’s Dance Company Street, which dominated the competition for two straight years, wound up second with 86.75 points. The Adamson Cast landed into the Top 3 for the first time, chalking up a third-best 84.25 points, staging an ensemble of Pinoy hits while clad in funky sleeveless barong tops.
“Gusto namin ipakita sa lahat na kaya naming i-work ‘yung iba’t ibang style (sa dancing). We also incorporated the color black into our costumes to show our strong personality (as a group),” said UP Street Dance Club coach Ariel Alba.
True enough, the Maroon movers brought the house down with an electrifying fusion of new jazz, wack, and break dance coupled with a variety of flips and popping to eclipse La Salle’s hip-hop and techno-jazz routine.
Also taking part in the competition are (in no particular order) are the FEU Dance Company, NU Bulldawgz, UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe, Company of Ateneo Dancers, and Red Warriors Dance Crew.
