UST beats UP to stay perfect in women's football

By Donjie Carreon Posted Dec 1st 2013

University of Santo Tomas blanked University of the Philippines, 2-0, to notch its second straight victory in as many assignments in women's football.

The University of Sto. Tomas defeated the University of the Philippines, 2-0, on Sunday at the Far Eastern University (FEU)-Diliman field to remain unbeaten in two matches in the 76th UAAP women’s football tournament.

Striker Jennizel Cabalan scored both goals for the Tigresses, while the rest of team hunkered down on defense to keep the Lady Maroons winless. Cabalan struck early, getting a goal just six minutes into the game. She scored again on the 27th minute with a flyer from left field at about fifty feet that sailed over the outstretched arms of the UP goalie to land inside the net.

UP tightened its defense in the second half, but could not catch up due to its repeated misses despite  getting several clean looks. In the 77th minute, UP’s Mary Rose Obra broke free from UST’s defenders but the Tigresses’ goalie got to the ball before her to prevent a goal.

UST coach JV Judal was happy that the team’s offense is finally clicking after adjustments in the position of players.

“At least yung striker naming naka-goal na… Dati kasi sa midfield nanggaling yung goal namin… Nakuha na niya yung momentum niya… Sabi ko naman sa trainings naming kailangan ng movement hindi lang dapat naka-tengga,” he said.

Judal, however, said that the team still needs to do better on offense and will work on this ahead of its match against defending champion FEU.

“More confident ako sa defensive side kaya mas naghahanda ako sa attacking… FEU will be a tough match… may two weeks pa kami para paghandaan sila,” he said.

In the first match, FEU also maintained its perfect record with a 4-0 victory against the De La Salle University.
