18 year old striker Steven Anotado caught fire late in the match and scored on consecutive goals to give the University of Sto. Tomas a 2-1 victory over the University of the East in the UAAP Season 76 Men’s Football tournament held on Friday, December 13, 2013 at the Far Eastern University-Diliman campus.
The Red Booters struck first with Jade Riva finding the back of the net in the 18th minute. It seemed like UE would cruise to another win but the complexion of the match suddenly changed late in the second half.
UST was on the assault as Jeffrey Lacsama kicked the ball high up in the air from the right flank towards Jean Clarino who was in position for a header. But, UE goalkeeper Lendon Clores got in the way of the ball and Clarino. As both Clores and Clarino jumped up to meet the descending football, their heads collided.
Clores’ took a shot to the forehead but was able to continue to play. Unfortunately for UST, Clarino could not as a huge cut was opened up at the back of his head causing him to bleed profusely.
But, with Clores still unsteady due to the collision, UST immediately took advantage as Steven Anotado scored to tie the match up in the 84th minute. As injury time commenced, Anotado once again got past Clores for the go ahead goal.
With the inspiring victory, UST improved to 2 wins, 2 losses and 1 draw while UE suffered their second straight defeat. Along with those losses, UE ends their first round matchups with 3 wins and 1 draw.
