Streaking Ateneo, skidding UST face off

By Josiah Albelda Posted Jan 8th 2014

Alyssa Valdez (#2) leads Ateneo de Manila University as it goes for its fifth consecutive victory when it tangles with struggling University of Santo Tomas.

How about five straight?

Ateneo de Manila University puts its streak on the line as the Lady Eagles take on University of Santo Tomas in the 76th UAAP women's volleyball tournament Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Arguably the league's hottest team after stringing together four consecutive victories, the Katipunan spikers hope to solidify their hold of the second spot against the Tigresses at 4pm.

Ateneo will also be looking to build more momentum before their much awaited showdown with archrival De La Salle University on Sunday.

The Lady Eagles opened 2014 with aplomb, plowing through hapless University of the Philippines behind the brilliance of Alyssa Valdez.

Amy Ahomiro and Ana Gopico also lent their hands in the win, chalking up 14 and 10 points, respectively, for a team still missing head coach Tai Bundit.

On the other hand, UST was blanked by National University last week, with the guns of Mela Tunay and Jem Gutierrez falling silent.

The Tigresses have lost back-to-back games in lopsided fashion and the wards of coach Odjie Mamon would have to regroup as soon as they can in an ultra-tight race to the playoffs.

The game will air live on Studio 23, BALLS SkyCable HD 167 and uaapsports.tv with a same day replay starting 11 p.m. on BALLS SkyCable channel 34 or Destiny Cable channel 36.
