Recap: NU earns first ever Women’s Tennis crown

Defending champion National University defeated the University of the Philippines, 3-2 in the Men’s division of the UAAP Season 76 Lawn Tennis tournament on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at the Olivares Sports Center.
The Bulldogs took two out of three singles matches with Dheo Talatayod beating UP’s Andrew Cano, 6-4, 6-3 and Leander Lazaro besting Angelo Esguerra, 6-3, 6-0. NU’s tandem of Gabriel Peña and Michael Madrio got the better of the Maroons’ Miguel Belda and Gabriel Gutierrez in their doubles encounter, winning, 6-3, 6-4.
University of Sto. Tomas also picked up a win over Ateneo de Manila University, 3-2 while De La Salle University got past the University of the East, 3-2.
In the Women’s division, La Salle also emerged victoriously after defeating UST, 3-2.
Two-time MVP Regina Santiago, Rachelle de Guzman and Marinel Rudas were all successful in scoring victories over their opponents in the three singles matches. The Tandem of Nikkirey Arandia and Anne Castillo proved to be too much for UST’s Mae Gitalan and Benevieve Caorte as they dominated their doubles match, winning, 6-1, 6-1.
UP won over Ateneo, 4-1 in the other matchup in the Women’s division.
