The University of the Philippines pulled off the most surprising upset win so far in the UAAP Season 76 Baseball tournament by defeating National University, 11-5 on Thursday, January 16, 2014 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Despite coming off two straight trips to the Finals including a championship two seasons ago, the Bulldogs seemed unable to match the energy level of the Fighting Maroons, who pressured them all throughout the game.
UP registered its first victory of the season while NU suffered its second defeat in the three games.
League leading De La Salle University escaped the pangs of defeat by scoring a 4-3 come-from-behind win against Adamson University.
Trailing 3-1 in the 9th inning, the Green Archers waxed hot and tallied three runs to take the lead and eventually, the victory.
La Salle remained in first place at 4-0 while the Falcons fell to 1-2.
Defending champion Ateneo de Manila University triumphed for the third time in four games after crushing the University of Sto. Tomas, 12-6. The Tigers suffered their third loss and are still in search of their first win of the season.
