NU sweeps lawn tennis first round

National University outplayed the University of Sto. Tomas, 4-1 on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at the Olivares Sports Center to complete a 5-0 sweep of the first round of eliminations in the Men’s division of the UAAP Season 76 Lawn Tennis tournament.

Because of the defeat of the Tigers, whose record dropped to 3-2, the University of the Philippines moved up the rankings and achieved solo second place after improving their record to 4-1. The Fighting Maroons blew out the University of the East, 5-0 to keep them winless at 0-5.

The last matchup in the Men’s division saw De La Salle University edge rival school Ateneo de Manila University, 3-2. With the win, the Green Archers improved to 2-3 while the Blue Eagles fell to 1-4.

In the Women’s division, NU also completed a sweep of the first round after subduing Ateneo 5-0. It was the fourth win of the Lady Bulldogs in as many games while the Lady Eagles were kept winless at 0-4.

Defending champion La Salle defeated the University of the Philippines 4-1 to finish in second place in the standings with a 3-1 record while the Lady Maroons suffered their third loss in four matches.
